Snyder Guard Station is located in beautiful Snyder Basin, at the base of Darby Mountain, 22 miles west of Big Piney, Wyoming. The cabin makes an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to hike, mountain bike, horseback ride, fish, or hunt. Photographers are enchanted by the region 's landscape and opportunities for wildlife watching. Open year-round, the cabin provides a horse corral for equestrian campers and allows pets as well. Winter access is by snowmobile, snowshoes or cross-country skis on a 10-mile trail. Natural Features The cabin sits in a grassy meadow surrounded by pine trees at an elevation of 8,000 feet. The cabin sits in between South Piney and Porcupine Creek. The cabin compound provides views of picturesque peaks including Riley Ridge and Darby Mountain. Moose, elk, mule deer, eagles and sandhill cranes are among the wildlife likely to be seen. An abundance of wildflowers color the landscape in summer. The Bridger-Teton National Forest offers more than 3.4 million acres of public lands for outdoor recreation. With its pristine watersheds, abundant wildlife and immense wildlands, the forest comprises a large part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest intact ecosystem in the lower 48.RecreationThe Wyoming Range National Recreation Trail can be accessed nearby within the basin, offering exciting hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding opportunities. Nearby streams provide trout fishing. In winter months, nearly 100 miles of snowmobile trails are open for exploring. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are other popular cold weather activities. Nearby Attractions The Snyder Guard Station sits just off of the historic Lander Cutoff of the Oregon Trail. Grave markers and other sites of historical significance can be viewed nearby.

How do I get to Snyder Guard Station?
From the Town of Big Piney, Wyoming, head west on Wyoming State Highway 350 (WY 350). Continue on WY 350 for approximately 10 miles, then make a left turn on South Piney Fish Creek Road/County Road 23-142. Follow South Piney Fish Creek Road/County Road 23-142 for approximately 10 miles where you will then enter the Bridger-Teton National Forest (the road name then changes to South Piney Creek/Forest Service (FS) Road 10128). Follow FS 10128 for approximately 2 miles and veer left at the fork to stay on FS 10128. Drive for approximately 0.6 miles and veer left at a second fork to continue on FS 10128. Drive 0.01 miles and take a right at a third fork getting onto FS 10128A. The Snyder Guard Station on the right 0.2 miles down FS 10128A.Please note: This site must be reserved on www.recreation.gov and needs a key to pass through the gate. Key should be retrieved from the Big Piney District Office. Approximate travel details from the City of Big Piney: 23 miles, 38 minutes.
