TerrainKit works because people on the road keep it honest. Every campsite, dump station, water fill, and overnight spot on the map is better when the community verifies it, updates it, and calls out what's changed. These guidelines exist to keep that information trustworthy and to keep the places we camp open for the next rig that rolls through.
By contributing locations, photos, or reviews to TerrainKit, you agree to follow these guidelines.
Contribute what you know firsthand
Add and edit locations you've actually visited. Share what matters to the next person: road conditions, rig-size limits, cell signal, water availability, seasonal closures. If you're not sure about a detail, leave it blank rather than guessing. Wrong information sends someone down a washed-out road at dusk.
Respect land ownership and closures
Only add locations that are legally accessible to the public. Never post private property as a camping or parking spot unless the owner has explicitly made it available. Respect posted closures, fire restrictions, and seasonal gates. If a spot is closed, report it so we can mark it, and don't encourage others to go around the gate.
Overnight parking at businesses is a privilege, not a right. Only list businesses that genuinely permit overnight stays, and note any conditions (ask the manager, no slide-outs, one night only).
Protect the places you share
Public land stays open when it's treated well. Follow "Leave No Trace" principles and encourage them in your contributions: pack out what you pack in, use existing sites and fire rings, bury or pack out waste, and dump tanks only at designated dump stations.
Think before you pin. If a fragile or little-known spot can't handle traffic, consider whether broadcasting exact coordinates is the right call.
Photos
Upload only photos you took yourself. Photos should show the location - the site, the access road, the facilities - not people. Don't upload images that include identifiable people without their consent, and never upload content that is sexually explicit, violent, or otherwise inappropriate.
Reviews
Write about your own experience, honestly. It's fine to say a spot was trashed, loud, or overrun - that's useful. It's not fine to harass other users, attack business owners or camp hosts personally, post someone's private information, or leave reviews for places you haven't visited.
What's not allowed
We remove content that includes:
- Private property listed without permission, or instructions for trespassing
- Deliberately false or misleading location data
- Spam, advertising, affiliate links, or self-promotion
- Harassment, hate speech, or threats directed at any person or group
- Anyone's personal information posted without their consent
- Content that promotes illegal activity
- Sexually explicit or gratuitously violent material
Reporting and moderation
Every location, photo, and review in TerrainKit can be flagged from within the app - incorrect data, duplicates, permanent closures, and inappropriate content all have a report flow. Reports go to a moderation queue reviewed by the TerrainKit team.
We may remove content, reject submissions, or suspend or terminate accounts that violate these guidelines. Repeated or severe violations result in permanent removal from the community. We aim to be fair, but calls about borderline content are ours to make.
