Gold Lake 4x4 campground in northeast Plumas County, CA lies at 6,400 feet in elevation within the Plumas National Forest. The mountains, forest and lake setting provide a picturesque landscape for relaxation, adventure and exploration. A popular location with 4x4 enthusiasts because of access to the backcountry. This is a rustic campground with no utilities, water, hookups, trash service, or restroom facilities. Campers must pack out all their sanitation and trash.

No. Lightning Tree Campground charges a fee. It is managed by the USFS. Sites are reservable through fs.usda.gov.

How do I get to Lightning Tree Campground?

Take Highway 89 southeast from Graeagle, California a couple miles. Proceed south on Gold Lake Highway for 10 miles to Gold Lake. Turn onto the Gold Lake Campground access road. At the 90-degree bend go straight and access the 4X4 staging area. Two miles up the boulder strewn 4X4 road is Gold Lake 4X4 Campground. Reservations are required for this campground. No first come first served camping. Visitors must pack out all solid human waste.
