Echo Chalet is a high-Sierra, summer-only, resort located approximately 10 miles from South Lake Tahoe and 49 miles east of Placerville off U.S. Highway 50. The resort was established in 1939 and is owned and managed by Tom and Kathleen Fashinell. The resort operates under a special use permit from the U.S. Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

Yes. Echo Chalet is free to use. It is managed by the USFS.
East on Highway 50 through Placerville and towards South Lake Tahoe. 1.8 miles east of the Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort, look for the brown Berkeley Camp / Echo Lake sign. Turn lefeet. Continue about 1/2 mile to Echo Lakes Road, turn lefeet again and continue to the end of the road.
