About this place

This primitive camping area contains 70 designated camping sites each marked with a 6" round post. Expansive scenic views of prairie and badlands attract many seasonal campers to this popular area. Camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Campfires are only allowed in contained fire pans. The unimproved road is rough with gravel, washboard, and small rocks on a natural roadway. Wet conditions make the area extremely muddy and slippery. There are no amenities available. Please recreate responsibly.

When is Pinnacles Camping Area open?

The season on record runs November 1 to April 30. Dates move with weather and with the managing office, so check before a shoulder-season trip.

How do I get to Pinnacles Camping Area?

From Wall, SD take Highway 240 for 6 miles south towards the entrance to Badlands National Park. Forest Road 7158 is on the east side of Highway 240 and is the north entrance to the Pinnacles Camping Area. Approximately 1.7 miles south is Forest Road 7170, the south entrance to the Pinnacles Camping Area.

What are the rules at Pinnacles Camping Area?

Camping in designated sites only. Campfires are only allowed if in an approved containment device. Pinnacles Designated Dispersed Camping Area is a primative camping area along Forest Road 7170 and 7158. There are no services available on site and visitors must practice pack it in pack it out ethics when visiting the area.
